The Discipline of Environment is research-intensive and dynamic, surrounded by some of the most spectacular and fascinating natural environments in Australia. This course provides postgraduate education for existing and future professionals on the background, principles and practices of environmental management, particularly in the context of wet-dry and semi-arid tropical ecosystems and arid landscapes. The generic skills concepts and applications covered in this course are also highly relevant to those working in other ecosystems. The course also includes a focus on the social context within which environmental management takes place. Includes specialist elective units in Ecological Restoration and Conservation: The course in Ecological Restoration and Conservation gives students a comprehensive introduction to the ecological processes that affect the conservation and restoration of vegetation, wildlife and landscapes. A focus of the unit is on rehabilitation of northern Australian systems but south east Asian and other Australian examples are discussed. Issues range from the creation of stable vegetation communities on mined land, the rehabilitation of pastoral land, to the restoration of specific fauna habitat or the maintenance of threatened flora and fauna populations. Students will understand key ecological processes affecting plant growth, ecosystem sustainability and community development and how to utilise those processes by effective environmental management to achieve rehabilitation and ecological management aims.
