The mining sector is at a critical juncture. As the world’s primary supplier of minerals essential for the clean energy transition and global infrastructure, its role is indispensable. Yet, the environmental footprint of extraction—particularly on land, water, and biodiversity—presents a profound challenge. The United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) COP17 provides a pivotal platform to redefine this paradigm, shifting the narrative from extraction to regeneration.

This high-level forum, convened under the UNCCD’s Business for Land (B4L) platform with the G20 Global Land Initiative, the Business Council of Mongolia, the International Council on Mining and Metals (ICMM), the Intergovernmental Forum on Mining, Minerals, Metals and Sustainable Development (IGF), the Land Rehabilitation Society of Southern Africa and other
key partners, will bring together the CEOs of the world’s leading mining companies with government ministers and international organizations. The goal is to forge a new, proactive partnership where the mining industry is recognized not just as a resource extractor, but as a critical partner in achieving Land Degradation Neutrality (LDN) and building resilient,
post-mining landscapes.

To ground this ambition in proven practice, a global Compilation of Mining Industry Best Practices in Land Restoration will be developed in the months leading up to the COP. This document, featuring case studies from ICMM members, IGF, Mongolian mining companies, and other global leaders, will serve as the evidence base for the forum’s discussions and a roadmap for future action. Its launch at the forum will be a centerpiece of the event, demonstrating the tangible, scalable solutions already at work.
